— Bajune Tobeta
— Bajune Tobeta
— Bajune Tobeta
— Bajune Tobeta
Jin Nakahara(2026.8)
Sérgio Mendes left this world on September 5, 2024, at the age of 83. In the 1960s he moved from his hometown of Rio to the United States and, leading Brasil '66, carried the allure of Brazilian music to the world by way of America. He then reached far beyond the boundaries of Brazilian music, delivering hit after hit as a creator of pop music. With his 1992 album Brasileiro he engaged with Brazilian music as it was happening, winning the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. And in 2006, through Timeless, produced by will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, he reached a whole new generation of fans.
His popularity in Japan was immense: from the sixties onward he performed here more than thirty times. Sérgio himself professed a deep fondness for Japan, producing Japanese musicians and making collaborative albums with them.
I, too, once served on the production team of Rendez-Vous (2013), the album on which Sérgio performed with ten singers from Japan and across Asia. At the very first production meeting, Sérgio said:
"I have no intention of repeating myself."
"I love to surprise people."
"I always want to be embraced by the young."
Sérgio was in his seventies then, and feeling his unshakably forward-looking spirit and youthful vigor at first hand was a bracing experience I have never forgotten.
Released two years after his passing, on the eve of the anniversary of his death, Sergio Mendes Tribute is an album conceived and produced by Bajune Tobeta — entrepreneur, producer, songwriter and arranger — gathering musicians from Brazil, Japan, the United States and beyond, beginning with Sérgio's wife, Gracinha Leporace, and recorded in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Rio.
Bajune Tobeta's musical range extends from classical music, film scores and YMO to Latin and Brazilian music, and his work in the field of healing music is remarkable in its own right. What, then, does Sérgio Mendes mean to him? He answered:
As a small child, I listened over and over to two LPs my father owned — Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 and Look Around — on our record player at home. My body still remembers the very air that rose up the moment the needle touched the vinyl.
I was a child; I knew nothing of bossa nova or MPB. But Sérgio's piano and arrangements had a certain refinement, an airiness, that even a child's ear could clearly recognize.
Over Brazilian rhythms, the harmonies of the female vocals would sway, and the piano would glide gracefully through it all.
Years later, listening again as a musician, I realized that it all stood upon a miraculous balance between Brazilian music and American pop. Leaning on neither, diminishing the virtues of neither. Sérgio Mendes did not "translate" different musical cultures — he made them coexist.
I myself have made music while moving between several worlds — contemporary classical, electronic music, Brazilian music — and when I trace that back to its origin, I arrive at Sérgio's records spinning in my childhood room. His music was the first to teach me that the walls between genres can be crossed beautifully.
When the news of his passing reached me in September 2024, the first thing that came to mind was not an idea for a new piece of music but the spinning surface of that LP. I wanted to give something back to the man I owed so much. That is the most honest motive behind this album.
— Bajune Tobeta
It is clear that for Bajune Tobeta, Sérgio Mendes's music was not only his point of origin but, in his very posture as a musician, something like a master's example. That devotion moved Sérgio's wife, Gracinha Leporace, and led to an extraordinary collaboration: Gracinha herself singing "Mas Que Nada." Let me quote Tobeta once more.
This project began from a single point: the wish for Gracinha Leporace to sing "Mas Que Nada."
If this was to be a tribute to Sérgio, at its center there had to be the voice of Gracinha, who sang beside him through half a century of his musical life. And "Mas Que Nada" is at once the signature of Brasil '66 and a song that symbolizes the musical life the two of them shared. Only with Gracinha singing it could this album become not "a well-made collection of covers" but a farewell from his family. That is what I believed.
Happily, Gracinha embraced this wish, and from the very beginning the project took its shape not as a mere guest appearance but as a tribute album officially sanctioned by the family and the estate. Every choice of repertoire and every arrangement is built upon that foundation.
Marianna Leporace, of Sérgio and Gracinha's family, and other family members also joined the recording on chorus.
— Bajune Tobeta
Through Gracinha, the record became an officially sanctioned tribute album; the album jacket and the trailer released on YouTube carry a photograph of Sérgio and Gracinha together, so affectionate that it brings a warmth to the eyes.
The repertoire was chosen by Tobeta, built around the songs on the two albums he listened to in childhood.
"This album is not an exhaustive, best-of-style tribute. It is the image of Sérgio as it lives in one musician's memory, rendered directly into sound."
The album opens with "Abertura" (overture), pauses at "Entreato" (interlude), and closes with "Goodnight, Maestro" — all three of them Tobeta originals — so that the whole may be heard in a single arc from beginning to end: a ceremony of mourning, by design.
Now then — let us walk through Sergio Mendes Tribute in track order.
Following the overture "Abertura"1, composed and arranged by Bajune Tobeta, comes the irresistible "Mas Que Nada"2. Written by Jorge Ben (now Jorge Ben Jor), it was a hit in Brazil in 1963; Sérgio covered it on Brasil '66's first album and made it a hit in the United States. He would record it several more times, and on Timeless (2006) he cut it with the Black Eyed Peas — a smash that memorably won over a young generation who had never known the Brasil '66 era. Here it features Gracinha's voice alongside Black Prez, the Los Angeles rapper who has recorded with Tobeta before. One feels the baton being passed on from Timeless.
Incidentally: after Gracinha finished her vocal session at the studio in Los Angeles, Tobeta dined with her at a restaurant near the shore in Santa Monica, listening to her speak of her days with Sérgio, of his musical philosophy, and of her feelings about this album. "I feel that the conversation that night became part of this work, as much as the recording itself. Hearing her talk about Sérgio near the ocean — that time itself seemed to connect, somehow, with memories of Rio," Tobeta recalls.
"Batucada"3 is a song by Marcos Valle, who in his early twenties made his first trip to the United States and briefly played in the band Sérgio led before forming Brasil '66. "Batucada" means the playing of a percussion ensemble. Sérgio recorded it on Brasil '66's third album, Look Around (1968). The vocalist here is Lisa Ono, collaborating with Tobeta for the first time. Known for her hushed, intimate bossa nova, Lisa here reveals a rhythmic sense rooted in true brasilidade, down to the very sound of the words. The orchestral arrangement, which breathes new life into a song covered so many times, is by Yoichi Murata, who produced Lisa's albums in the 1990s and recorded a collaborative album with Ivan Lins in Rio in 2010.
"Água de Beber"4 was composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim — whom Sérgio deeply admired — with lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. Sérgio recorded it on Brasil '66's first album. The featured artist here is Filó Machado, from the state of São Paulo, a singer-songwriter and guitarist of singular style who in 2005 released an album of Jobim's songs in duet with a female singer. Equally vital to this track is AtomTM (also known as Señor Coconut), who co-arranged it with Tobeta and handled the programming. The two go back a long way: AtomTM contributed arrangements to Tobeta's album African Mode.
"Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)"5 is, like "Mas Que Nada," a Jorge Ben song; Sérgio recorded it on Equinox (1967). Here the singer-songwriter and guitarist Saigenji performs it solo. The two are old friends — Saigenji was the featured vocalist on "Taiyo no Iro," a television commercial song Tobeta composed in 2006. Saigenji's own music, too, ranges widely beyond Brazil, into Latin American folklore, jazz, soul and hip-hop.
"Night & Day"6 was written by Cole Porter in the 1930s for the musical stage and became an American standard; Sérgio recorded it on Equinox (1967). Here it is sung in English by the Rio-born singer Thais Motta, with Filó Machado again supporting on vocals and chorus, as on track four, and AtomTM on programming. Let me share Tobeta's comment on AtomTM.
As his work under the name Señor Coconut shows, he is second to none in the world when it comes to reinterpreting Latin and Brazilian music in the language of electronic music. And his approach never descends into parody or exoticism. A deep respect for the original and an absolute conviction in electronic sound live side by side in him. I think of him as a musician who carries forward, with today's technology, the very thing Sérgio pursued all his life — the coexistence of different musical languages. That is what his presence on this album means.
— Bajune Tobeta
"The Look of Love"7 is by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Sérgio recorded it on Look Around (1967); released as a single, it climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the hit that established his fame as the maestro of pop-bossa. Here it is performed as a piano solo by Febian Reza Pane, a longtime collaborator of Taeko Onuki, Lisa Ono and others. Tobeta comments:
The fact that Sérgio began his career as a pianist was something I kept in mind throughout the making of this album. That is precisely why I felt the album needed, somewhere within it, a stretch of time given over to the piano itself, stripped of all ornament.
Pane's piano has a delicate, sweet elegance that never slips into sentimentality.
In the middle of the album, after so many voices and rhythms have crossed paths, his solo piano rendition of "The Look of Love" creates a place where the listener can pause and quietly breathe. That this performance would sit exactly here was decided from the very start, as part of the album's overall design.
— Bajune Tobeta
"Inútil Paisagem"8 was composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with lyrics by Aloysio de Oliveira. Sérgio recorded it as an instrumental in 1964, before forming Brasil '66, on his New York-recorded leader album Bossa Nova York — with Jobim himself on guitar. The title means "useless landscape." Here Paula Morelenbaum sings, and Tobeta plays piano. Paula, together with her husband, the cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, was a member of Banda Nova, the regular band Jobim led in the last ten years of his life. In 2001 she sang this very song on CASA, the album recorded by MORELENBAUM2/SAKAMOTO, her unit with Jaques and Ryuichi Sakamoto, who revered Jobim. The version here is not a new recording but a reissue from Tobeta's album Brave New World ~RELAX WORLD~ — and yet in it, Sérgio's devotion to Jobim, Paula's devotion to Jobim and to Sakamoto, and Tobeta's devotion to Sérgio and to Sakamoto seem to cross time and become one. There is a story in that.
After "Entreato"9, arranged and programmed by Tobeta, a second version of "Mas Que Nada"10 features Thais Motta, making her second appearance, and JOCA, a rapper raised — like Sérgio — in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. The arrangement is by Kazuo Yoshida, a veteran drummer of the generation that heard Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 in real time, who also served as this album's director and ran the sessions in Rio. In the 1980s, in Los Angeles, Yoshida recorded De Novo under the name L.A. Transit, playing with Gracinha and other musicians from Sérgio's circle. Here, too, there is a story.
And at the close comes "Goodnight, Maestro"11, played on piano by Tobeta with all his heart. The lingering resonance of the final note rises toward the heaven where Sérgio now is…
Tokyo, Los Angeles, Rio. Watching the sounds of three cities gather, in the end, into a single album felt like a modest reliving of the work Sérgio devoted his life to — making music coexist across distance.
— Bajune Tobeta
Having said this, Bajune Tobeta now heads for Rio to record his own leader album. Sergio Mendes Tribute is also a point of departure toward what comes next. Let us look forward to it.
Jin Nakahara(2026.8)
"Não pretendo me repetir."
"Adoro surpreender as pessoas."
Sérgio a gravou no terceiro álbum do Brasil '66, Look Around (1968).
Sérgio a gravou no primeiro álbum do Brasil '66.

"The Look of Love"7 é de Burt Bacharach e Hal David.
